Harps & Angels
: :Randy Newman's first studio album of all new material in nearly a decade is, by turns, hilarious, poignant and scathingly satirical. Harps and Angels often has an easy going Crescent City feel, with Newman on piano fronting a small combo and revealing, as Rolling Stone put it after the Carnegie Hall show, his serious love and study of the New Orleans piano tradition.

Cars
: :Cars is a typical Disney-Pixar animated movie in that it deals with an anthropomorphic character (here, a car) and the heartwarming values of family and friendship. (Alas, we'll have to wait a little while longer for the company to take on greed and selfishness.) The accompanying soundtrack is equally typical in that it's split between catchy pop songs and a score by Randy Newman. The clear highlight of the pop tracks is Sheryl Crow's boisterous, huge-sounding 'Real Gone' (her best song in ages). Rascal Flatts also cover Tom Cochrane's 1991 hit 'Life Is ...

Disney's Greatest 3
: :Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the 'greatest' concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ('Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious,' 'Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da,' and 'Heigh Ho' were hits off of Vol. 1; 'Bare Necessities,' 'It's a Small World,' and 'Some Day My Prince Will Come' stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad 'I'll Try,' from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to ...

The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection

But listeners less prone to swoon over highbrow symphonic grandeur may respond with a yawn. Yes, the collection is a wonderful reference source, with a sweeping chronology from John Ford's Stagecoach to Lawrence Kasdan's Wyatt Earp. And the pieces are competently ...

12 Songs
: essential recording:With 1970's 12 Songs, Randy Newman eschewed the string-driven expanse of its self-titled predecessor for unorchestrated solo and rock quartet arrangements (Ry Cooder, Clarence White of the Byrds, and Jim Gordon of Derek and the Dominos are among the sidemen). If anything, the lyrical perspective on these songs is stranger (and certainly more paranoid) than on any other collection the singer/songwriter has ever done. 'Let's Burn Down the Cornfield' explores arson as an aphrodisiac. In 'Lucinda' the narrator pleads in vain for his California golden girl ('in her graduation gown') to ...
